A New Era…

Apologies for the long delay since my last post. So much has happened and I’ve needed time to gather myself. On February 9th, I went to a sound bath retreat at the Integratron where I was visited by the beloved E.T. the Extraterrestrial. We really hit it off and he has continued to stick around on my journeys through life in Los Angeles. But before we returned from Joshua Tree, we had some good times.

He sure does look different from image to image but I guess that is what makes him so special! He’s taught me so much about life and spirituality and I’m more than happy to share this with you over time.

So my birthday was last weekend and I gotta say, it was the best birthday I’ve had in recent memory (not just because of E.T.) My mom came to visit for the weekend and we ate our way across L.A. including Son of a Gun, Pizzeria Mozza (for a birthday gluten-festival), Alma and Sunday Supper at Lucques! I also cooked us some glorious food from the Mar Vista Market.

We also visited the Huntington Gardens which is pretty much my favorite spot in Los Angeles. The conservatory at the Desert Gardens had the craziest plants. Of course, E.T. gave us a full tour of the plant life from his native planet.

We also visited the Eames Case Study House in Pacific Palisades. It was a dream to see it in person!

Well, E.T. and I are going to make curtains now for my new apartment. He’s really crafty! Who knew?!?!?

My Very Own Kale!

Would you look at this? On Saturday I bought myself some plants at the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market. Now I can make tons of kale salad and other *secret* experiments. Haha. I made my own mayo yesterday from Bittman‘s classic book.

I was in a bit of a rush so I need to experiment more! I think I used too much mustard maybe? I ate lunch with my good friend Broccoli in my heavenly new aparment:

Finally, I can’t express enough how much I love the Original Farmer’s Market. My friend Maura and I walked there from my house! How cool! I’ve been indulging in ice cream there which is a rarity for me!

Carrot Dog and Moving Gems!

You might look at the food above and think it looks normal. Well, its not. What appears to be a hot dog is actually a CARROT! On the eve of my big move, I went to the beloved Farmer’s Market building on Fairfax (not to be mistaken for an actual farmers market) which is one of my absolute favorite places in LA. My friend and I were grabbing a quick bite before going to see Repulsion at the Silent Movie Theatre (it’s worth seeing if you are wondering). So, my friend said he wanted to check out this new hot dog place called Fritzidog and I thought I would walk over to see it not thinking I would eat there. And then I found out that they had vegan hot dogs with gluten-free buns. I was in a giddy (almost manic) mood because of my upcoming move so I indulged. I guess I was distracted when the girl was describing the vegan dog to me because I missed the part about how it was an actual carrot cooked for a long time in a sous-vide. It wasn’t until I bit in that I realized. Check it out:

Pretty crazy, right? The seasoning of the carrot was great and I would totally eat it again. The gluten-free bun was a little dry. But my friend said his normal bun was dry. The dijon mustard was spicy and deeeelicious. Anyway, the move went great and I am in love with my new apartment. Now that I have my own personal kitchen, I finally unpacked ALL of my kitchen stuff (most of which has been in boxes in various garages for the past year and a half). So in the process of unpacking I found my beloved treasures. First, I found my Garfield Lasagna dish which was originally my Mom’s. Although, this now strikes me as odd since she doesn’t own anything else Garfield related.

The next gem was one of my treasured McDonald’s happy meal cups that has a field of Hamburgers on them. So much love:

Finally, I found this hand-painted mug that is probably my most cherished item because of the experience of when I found it.

This is going to be kinda personal but what the hell! Here goes! I bought this mug from a yard sale on Silver Lake Blvd back in April of 2008 long before I ever dreamed that I would live in Los Angeles. I was visiting one of my best friends while taking a little vacation from work with my ex-boyfriend who had never been to California. That morning I had found out that I was wait-listed at Yale and I was pretty upset. I was not getting along with my ex at the moment and I remember driving up Silver Lake Boulevard feeling overwhelmed with not knowing what I would do if I didn’t get into Yale. I pulled the car over. I don’t even remember why. Maybe I saw the yard sale? Anyhoo, I got out and walked over to the sale and saw this adorable mug. For whatever reason, it had a calming affect on me and allowed me to cope with the intensity of the moment. A month later I got in off the wait-list and here I am today. I look back on this moment as a kind of foreshadowing for how Los Angeles is a place where I can find calm and creative inspiration. I’m glad that I found my way back here. Thank you mug!

Mind Blown

Ok, so yesterday my iPhone blew my mind. First I saw someone Instagram about this new iPhone App called Clay Jam (screen shot above) that is visually and technically amazing. From what I can tell so far, it’s very similar to one of my favorite video games ever Katamari Damacy. So in the game you have to create new characters by collecting clay to repopulate a planet or something. Sidenote: I am not really a gamer or anything but just love old school Nintendo which this feels reminiscent of. So claymation has entered into my iPhone sphere, pretty cool! Which leads me to my next mind-blown moment: Twitter’s new app Vine which is basically animated GIFs in a feed similar to Instagram on your phone.

While I was sick in bed earlier this month, I got the idea to start making animated GIFs of my claymation characters again possibly sharing recipes for kombucha, etc. And now, there is this perfect platform for my idea! Follow me and get ready! Vine does have to figure out the porn issue. One of my 6 followers is a man masturbating and I don’t know how to block the user! Yikes!

Back to the Kombucha, I started a 2nd ferment today and it’s just in time because I am fresh out of my last batch and I am addicted and can’t live a day without it!!!

Fabric Heaven

I don’t know why it took me so long to head to the Garment District in LA. It’s mind-blowing! I used to go to the one in NYC back in the day (around 10 years ago) and the LA version is fitting with other LA vs. NYC experiences. It’s cleaner, more expansive, and less stressful. I found this great store that sells beautiful patterned silks and silk chiffons. I’m thinking I am going to make them into curtains for my new place but I also might just make them into scarves! The woman at the store was hilarious! She kept going on and on about how good my taste is! It was kind of intoxicating actually and I admit I probably bought a little more than I wanted to because of it. I also would like to take that woman with me everywhere to continuously compliment me on how amazing and talented I am. I mean, who doesn’t need to hear that kind of stuff every once in awhile? We also went to this great bead store. I bought these giant wooden beads that I am going to hand paint! And some amazing pom poms too!

We also saw some authentic polka dot ghosts!

As usual, I’ve been experimenting with my Kale Salad recipe. This one included roasted broccoli, avocado, carrot, apple, and sliced almonds. It was unreal!

Finally, I leave you with the latest addition to my new crystal collection! It’s an amethyst which is my birth stone. I’m quite fond of it. I bought it at last night’s monthly Sound Bath in Echo Park.

Food Disconnect

I am in the middle of packing to move to my *new* apartment and I snapped a photo of these fun items. Then it occurred to me that most of the food in my art is still junk food but the food I actually eat has become increasingly healthy. Check out my lunch today! Does it get any better than this? I’m sorry pizza. I mean you are great and all but roasted cauliflower and broccoli just cannot be beat! I am hooked!

Yo Lalalala

This is a picture of me when I was around 14 or 15. It was taken around the time I fell in love with Yo La Tengo. The purpose of this post is basically to urge you to listen to their new album because its AMAZING. I have been listening to them for more than half my life and this new album is blowing my mind!!! I am turning 32 years old in a few weeks (no, I am not 26 as most people assume) and I can’t believe that they are still putting out unbelievably good records. I’m super bummed I missed their show at Amoeba last week because I was still sick! Speaking of sickness, the nasty superbug seems to still be going around and I wanted to share a list of herbal recommendations that I have sent out to a few friends who are sick. Disclaimer: I am not a doctor so you should only follow this advice at your own risk. Haha. When I revamp the blog, I’ll add this to the resources section! For now, enjoy and get better (if you are sick):

1. Drink apple cider vinegar (Braggs organic raw): a couple tablespoons in a full glass of water three times a day!
2. Oregano oil or capsules: supposed to be very good for fighting off infections!
3. Elderberry extract: very good for flu/colds
4. Grapefruit seed extract: has natural antibiotics/antiviral properties; comes in pill or liquid form
5. Garlic capsules
6. Wellness Formula by Source Naturals: it has chinese herb blend in it called yin chao that really works!
7. Zinc!!!
8. Get acupuncture
9. Inhale hot steam from a shower, a boiling pot of water or a cup of tea

Other than that, the usual rest, soup, sleep, etc.
